A trader made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the event.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the end of January rose in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which joined the platform last month and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But the market's assessment had increased to over 10% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a sharp shift in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.

A handful of other individuals also earned significant sums from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Emerges

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A bill introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the United States, with users able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Insider trading is a crime in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
