Are You Able to Crack This? That Overlooked Netherlands Creation Which Forged our Modern Globe
One can find numerous candidates to claim the designation as “world’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.
According to a new book, however, that honor belongs to a mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised cutting, constructing a modest trading ship required approximately ten sawyers working over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, the same quantity of processed timber might be manufactured in less than a week.”
Thanks to their speedy automated saw, which turned logs to planks with virtually no human effort, Dutch builders were able to build vessels more quickly compared to any other nation, which sparked a century of Netherlands naval, financial and artistic dominance across Europe and the globe.
The First True Industrial Machine
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, contends the writer, was “humanity’s initial true industrial machine.” A windmill rotated a gear. One component converted the circular motion into up-and-down action for the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed the spinning movement into a sideway’s movement advancing the log toward the cutter. A geared mechanism shifted the log ahead one precise increment each stroke.
“Each element seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to integrate them so the machine operated within a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting on every descending motion and advancing with each upward motion. It was a remarkably intelligent use of basic components.”
