Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such drugs should be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
